Little Eyolf confronts us with the challenge of how to go on in a world wracked with the inevitability and apparent meaninglessness of loss. Unlike Ibsen’s earlier prose plays, Little Eyolf is less a work of naturalism than a drama of the spirit, closer to Beckett than to Hedda Gabler or A Doll’s House. Ibsen translator Michael Meyer calls it, “the most subtle and elusive of all Ibsen’s plays” and “one of the old master’s supreme achievements.” Says director David Herskovits, “Little Eyolf’s world is shot through transcendence, but individuals’ lives grind on with quiet desperation.”
