TMT: This is your third production with Target Margin. In the past you have been in the Yiddish Lab productions,THE(*)INN, and Good Night World. What keeps you coming back to us?
UC: Target Margin really allows you to create. The work that they produce challenges me to think outside the box, and develop my own artistic agenda while trying to reconcile that with the project I’m working on. It’s a delicate balance but when pulled off properly it’s ridiculously satisfying.
TMT: This is also not the first time you’ve been directed by David. What has the process been like?
UC: I learn a lot from David. Every time we rehearse. Probably more than he realizes. Probably more than I realize. I feel like I’ve adapted a lot of his approaches to the work. It’s very inspiring.
TMT: As an actor, what was it like to work with Gertrude Stein’s poetic language?
UC: Great. I’m a fan of her alliteration and repetition. I think I’d find joy in simply closing my eyes and listening to the words. It would allow me to interpret it any way I want. And I think that manifests in the work. I can’t help just stating the text, and letting them land on the audience and allowing it to affect them in their own personal way.
TMT: If you had an afternoon with Gertrude, what would you do?
UC: Drink. Discuss what’s wrong with the world today, particularly the theater and how we can make it better. But mainly drink. A lot.
TMT: What’s next for you?
UC: Ohh just the typical actor grind. Some possible workshops in the future you know how that ish goes. And catching up on fantasy football and sleep.
